Particle transport associated with rail braking

This project in partnership with Alstom is part of a CIFRE thesis. Its aim is to characterize the particles emitted during train braking and track their transport from generation to deposition.

Positioned at the frontier between tribology and fluid mechanics, the study breaks down into several phases, among which :

  • the pre-study phase of a simple academic particle injection configuration in order to compare the relevance of several numerical models.
  • characterization phase : reduced-scale tribological braking tests on a real system using HSM (High-Speed Machining) to experimentally create particles derived from the degradation of rubbing surfaces in order to characterize them (size, shape, composition) and to visualize their emission (velocity, concentration and trajectory).
  • modeling phase : In order to determine a predictive multiphase numerical model of particle behavior based on the visualization tests carried out.

A prototype test bench is being developed at LAMIH.
