SurferLab

Laboratory in distributed intelligence for transportation systems

SurferLab is a joint laboratory between Bombardier Transport, Prosyst and the University of Valenciennes and Hainaut-Cambrésis. It has its origins in an FUI project, the SURFER ("active railway surveillance") project. This project, carried out between 2009 and 2013, enabled the industrial partners (Bombardier Transport and Prosyst) to gain in competitiveness thanks in particular to a series of scientific concepts matured within the University of Valenciennes and Hainaut-Cambrésis, transferred, appropriated and deployed by the industrialists.

SurferLab is built around the founding theme of embedding artificial intelligence-based processing capabilities in complex mobile systems (trains, cars, airplanes, trucks, AGVs, etc.) to fulfill and optimize various functions, from driving to monitoring and diagnostics (health monitoring). Our aim is to make these systems more intelligent, more autonomous and able to adapt to the unexpected. We consider that these systems are immersed within a fleet, interacting with a control or maintenance center and the human operator. The approach adopted is thus one of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and a priori concerns all modes of land transport.      The CNRS, through its INS2I institute, guarantees the scientific content of the activities carried out within the joint laboratory. The Hauts-de-France region contributes to its financing, and the I-Trans competitiveness cluster has accredited SurferLab and has been supporting and advising the partners since the first SURFER FUI application.
