Biocompatibility of breast implant texturing
The texturing of breast implants was developed to reduce the complications that appeared with the first breast implants. However, the biocompatibility of texturizations is now discussed : increasing evidence has shown that some texturizations would be the cause of chronic inflammation in breast tissues. This project proposes to study the biocompatibility of texturations by ex vivo analysis and tribological testing.
A surface measurement methodology based on three instruments (Micro-tomography, Focus Varying Microscope and Interferometer) has been developed and validated by multi-scale analysis.
Genomic analyses on genes selected to be involved in the organism's reaction to the foreign body were carried out on periprosthetic capsule tissue. The qPCR technique enabled us to quantify the expression of these genes. Histological analyses confirmed the molecular biology results. Tribometer tests and explant analyses were also carried out, and a wear indicator was constructed.
After correlation of topographic parameters, genomic analyses and the wear indicator, a classification of texturations was proposed.
