Communication assistance software for better social inclusion of people with Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Its repercussions on quality of life and social participation make it a major public health issue.

There are not enough pragmatic answers to address complaints related to speech intelligibility, emotional adjustment and relationships formed with others. The ParkinsonCom project aims to address some of the challenges associated with communication difficulties, while taking into account the progression of the disease. The aim is to co-construct an evolving software tool to aid communication, with and for PD patients and their families. To respond to the complexity of these needs, the ParkinsonCom project is a multi-disciplinary, international partnership. Researchers, developers, professionals, patients and caregivers are all involved in this partnership. The ParkinsonCom project is organized into specific modules :

  • Research and needs analysis for an in-depth understanding of patients' evolving communication disorders and their daily impacts.
  • The co-construction of the software tool through a user-centered approach to design, specification and evaluation.
  • The evaluation of the software tool for its continuous improvement to ensure usability, efficiency and acceptability of the product, in line with ethical and deontological issues.
  • Cross-border training and communities of practice around psycho-education relating to social communication assistance as well as on the use of the tool.
  • Communication aimed at a wider audience so as to present a socially validated tool, ensuring the dissemination of results.

The final tool will be bilingual (French and Dutch).
