Characterization and crash behavior modeling of structural adhesives associated with mechanical bonds
Despite the strong interest of the automotive industry and the scientific community studying bonded connections, numerical modeling techniques of an aged adhesive subjected to dynamic loading have never been built for an industrial context.
The scientific challenge is to link the parameters that drive crash behavior (including their variabilities) with the evolution of the microstructure of an aged glue. This requires a very clean characterization of both the initial and the aged glue, as well as the choice of a validation strategy involving testing and modeling at different scales.
The scientific challenge is to link the parameters that drive crash behavior (including their variabilities) with the evolution of the microstructure of an aged glue. Many surface-to-surface bonding models exist. They were mainly developed to deal with delamination problems between composite plies, and then extended to a representation of adhesive.
Surface-surface bonding models exist.
In the case of bonding, behavior is generally identified by a mechanical analysis derived from Arcan-type shear and pull-out tests. The aim of the model is then to be able to access without testing the effect of other stresses in a direct or indirect path. For fracture, cohesive models are strongly linked to a fracture mechanics-type approach to describing crack propagation, so an analysis relatively dependent on the finite element model of a DCB or ENF test stripping.
.Few models take into account the dynamic effects of adhesive other than through coefficients fitted to the tests. Few results concern the effect of aging on the dynamic behavior of adhesives, and especially on the failure criterion, which is highly sensitive to the nature of the stress. Yet the aging of polymers such as structural glue is a major phenomenon whose consequences on dynamic and fracture properties are little known.
