Numerical and physical modeling of ballistic impacts on thorax under ballistic protection. Reconstruction of real cases, mechanisms, lesion criteria and ballistic protection evaluations

The aim of this thesis will be to contribute to the development of a tool for predicting injuries to the human body, and in particular to various organs such as the lungs, heart and skeleton, in the context of closed thoracic trauma of thoracic origin.

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the development of a tool for predicting injuries to the human body, and in particular to various organs such as the lungs, heart and skeleton, in the context of closed thoracic trauma of thoracic origin. As each of these anatomical components has different tolerance thresholds and injury criteria, the aim will be to develop injury curves specific to each anatomical component.

.

The existing HUByx digital model will be used and modified, and organ-specific behavior laws will be employed. The stage of digital reconstructions of real ballistic cases will be carried out as well as the clinical analysis of these cases with the assistance of the Armed Forces Health Service. The cases reconstructed in this way will enable significant statistical analysis, leading to the development of risk curves specific to each organ. The criteria and thresholds will then be used for the numerical characterization of protection systems.

In addition, in the context of the previous thesis funded by the AID, a physical "surrogate" was developed and validated. This will also be used to characterize these protections, in parallel with the digital aspect. Improvements to the materials making up the latter's components will then be considered, enabling a fair correlation between the physical and digital twins.
