Mobility assistance system for people with intellectual disabilities
Today, France is home to 900,000 people with intellectual disabilities (ID), representing around 20% of people with disabilities. Every year, between 6,000 and 8,500 children are born with an intellectual disability [Rogeret, 2020].
Policies at both national and international level place inclusion and social participation at the heart of laws governing the rights of people with disabilities. In France, for example, the February 11, 2005 law calls for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for people with disabilities (compensation, schooling, employment, accessibility and administrative simplification). This law is complemented at international level, by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, UN 2006), signed by France in 2010, which aims at respect for individual autonomy, freedom to make one's own choices, social participation and accessibility.
Also, to enable people with intellectual disabilities to access autonomy and social participation, mobility is a real issue. Indeed, knowing how to get around in the environment to reach different places in life (school, work, leisure, family, etc.) has become an essential skill for social participation.
So, to enable people with intellectual disabilities to access autonomy and social participation, mobility is a real issue.
The project's scientific problem is to respond to the difficulties encountered by people with intellectual disabilities in getting around, which reduce their social participation and autonomy.
The project has two main objectives:
- An operational objective which aims to develop a mobility aid system adapted to people with intellectual disabilities, in order to encourage the development of autonomy when navigating, and which adapts to the context (environment, transport, user).
- A structural objective that aims to develop and structure collaboration between interdisciplinary university research, associating the two fields of Human and Social Sciences and Science and Technology, the associative world and entrepreneurship.
