ISHY
Implementation of Ship Hybridisation
The shipbuilding industry needs to invest in low-CO2 propulsion technologies, but faces a number of challenges:
- - Ships have very long operational lives (30-40 years)
- - Sector players' lack of knowledge of alternative technologies .
- - The limited number of infrastructures enabling H2 supply.
- - Standards for the safety and certification of these alternative technologies are still unclear
- - The protectionism of traditional players towards current solutions (Diesel, Gas, etc).
The ISHY project therefore faces the following challenges:
- - Demonstrate the benefits of low-CO2 propulsion technologies for different types of ships.
- - Demonstrate the feasibility of H2 supply solutions in ports .
- - Develop tools and methods that demonstrate the benefits and aid the transition to low-CO2 propulsion for new vessels and the retrofit of older vessels.
The ISHY project aims to develop, test and validate technical tools and socio-economic implementation models for hybridization or fuel cell powering of ships. The scope of the project also includes aspects of hydrogen supply in ports. The project will demonstrate the effectiveness, in terms of CO2 emission reduction, of these approaches by updating and building several types of ships (CTV, barges, cruise ship, etc.) as well as the associated port storage solutions.
.The main results expected from the ISHY project are:
- The installation of multimode hybrid propulsion in an inspection vessel.
- A hybrid barge powered by a fuel cell and batteries.
- A personnel transfer vessel (CTV) and a barge equipped with a hybrid propulsion system (Diesel-Electric and H2)
- A new cruise ship (400 persons) equipped with hydrogen propulsion.
- A fuel cell model that can be used in different ships
- A hydrogen supply station installed in the port of Ostend.
