Characterization of the combustion of natural and torrefied wood pellets as an alternative fuel for clean energy production (Thesis by Xiangyu Zhu)
The aim of the thesis is to quantify and compare the combustion characteristics and pollutant emissions of natural wood pellets and torrefied pellets (black pellets). These pellets will be used for domestic heating and power generation in the UK and France. The main objectives are as follows:
...- Develop physico-chemical and kinetic models for natural and torrefied wood pellets to better understand biomass combustion processes ;
- Quantify and compare the combustion and environmental characteristics of a pellet for various conditions with imaging techniques ;
Quantify and compare the combustion characteristics of natural and torrefied wood pellets in a biomass boiler and pollutant emissions using advanced diagnostics (laser diagnostics in the combustion chamber and stack, smoke analysis) gaseous and particulate emissions will be measured.
