Pacification and Reconciliation in the Spanish Habsburg Worlds

New book by Yves Junot published by Brepols

.

This book is the first to analyze pacification strategies within the Spanish monarchy on a global scale. It deals with the development and consequences of the many revolts of the early modern period in the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, the Sicilian and Sardinian islands, cities along the North Sea and the Spanish Americas. These comparative studies highlight the different ways in which the Spanish monarchy dealt with town and district rebellion, ranging from military responses and repression to offers of negotiation and reconciliation. They also highlight common features of these pacification processes, such as promises of pardon, the granting of pardons and the instruction of peace envoys. The individual chapters, each accompanied by an edition of sources, show how reconciliation and reincorporation into the orbit of the Spanish Habsburgs proved to be a laborious process with an unpredictable outcome.
