While the study of social mobility is not new, it has been attracting renewed interest in recent years. In order to map this situation, back in 2014 Chantal Jaquet proposed an innovative approach by defining a theory of non-reproduction based on ego-documents and literary works.
Criticizing free will, the French philosopher focuses on the psychic determinism of people on the move, which she calls "complexion", resulting from many combined factors (background, public policies, religion, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, parental expectations, only child status or place in siblings, various encounters, etc.). All of these elements, largely pan-human affects, make this theory applicable to diverse societies.
Based on Hispanic works, the book explores the making of transclasses (or class defectors), i.e. the reasons for breaking with social reproduction, as well as the psychology of upwardly mobile people in Spain and America.
