Cultural misunderstandings: problems, challenges, opportunities

New book by Stéphanie Schwerter published by Frank & Timme
. Resulting from the symposium "Les enjeux de l'incompréhension culturelle" ("The challenges of cultural misunderstanding") organized by the Transversal Cluster

.

Language is linked to culture in that it reflects worldviews specific to a given discursive community. The passage from one language to another induces a cross-perspective that can be as much a source of enrichment as of misunderstanding. This collective work proposes to study misunderstandings in order to understand the mechanisms that underlie them and sometimes make them a necessary step in understanding the other. To this end, the contributions review the definition of certain concepts linked to cultural differences. They explore a variety of contexts, from literature to social interpreting, cinema, theater, graphic novels and social networks. As many language practices are scrutinized (lexical neology, audiovisual translation, multimodal translation...) to understand both the problems, challenges and opportunities linked to cultural misunderstandings.
