Arthur transmedia

New book by Brigitte FRIANT-KESSLER and Emanuele ARIOLI published by Hermann

The legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table has undergone a revival thanks to mass culture, becoming resolutely " transmedia ". Today, it circulates as much in cinema and TV series as in comics, music and even the world of games. This book looks at productions linked to the legend of King Arthur, examining the mechanisms of transposition to other media, and the ways in which these old stories interact with the contemporary world. It follows the transmedia destiny of certain Arthurian heroes - such as Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere, the fairy Morgana and the Lady of the Lake - as well as emblematic elements and themes of the myth, such as the Grail and the sword Excalibur, or the wars waged by the conquering king, the Breton marvel, and the female figures of fairies and queens. A malleable legend par excellence, it has been reinvested - in every era, every context and every medium - with constantly renewed meanings.

This collective, interdisciplinary work is mainly, but not exclusively, the result of papers presented at the international colloquium "Arthur transmédial: la légende du roi Arthur entre cinéma, séries, arts graphiques, musique et jeux" organized by Brigitte Friant-Kessler and Emanuele Arioli, teacher-researchers at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (Valenciennes), with the support of LARSH, UPHF and MESHS. This colloquium was held remotely on November 12 and 13, 2020
