A UPHF PhD student on the cover of an international scientific journal
The article by François Berkmans, a PhD student in the Arts and Sciences cotutelle, has been selected to illustrate the front cover of the journal Fractal and Fractional. A strong recognition for an interdisciplinary project supported by UPHF and its European partners.
The Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (UPHF) is proud to announce that the article entitled "Uncertainty-Based Scale Identification and Process Topography Interaction Analysis via Bootstrap: Application to Grit Blasting", published in the international journal Fractal and Fractional, has been selected from 55 contributions to illustrate the cover of volume 9, issue1.
This work is the fruit of an interdisciplinary collaboration between two UPHF laboratories:

the LAMIH (Laboratoire d'Automatique, de Mécanique et d'Informatique Industrielles et Humaines),
- and the LARSH (Laboratoire de Recherche Sociétés et Humanités), in partnership with Poznań Polytechnic University, as part of the EUNICE European inter-university alliance.
An innovative, cross-disciplinary approach
The paper proposes a new method for identifying relevant scales for the study of interactions between manufacturing processes and surface topography.
Based on an extension of Benoît Mandelbrot's work, the approach mobilizes the statistical technique of Bootstrap, enabling measurement uncertainty to be assessed.
The authors thus show how to robustly quantify the effects of sandblasting on material roughness, opening up major prospects for the optimization of industrial processes and the characterization of functional surfaces.
An inspiring career path
François Berkmans, lead author of the study, is the second UPHF doctoral student to carry out cotutelle research between the Sciences and the Arts. His background illustrates UPHF's polytechnic, interdisciplinary and internationally-oriented vision.
This project, at the crossroads of disciplines, fully embodies the university's ambition to bring basic sciences, engineering and creation into dialogue to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
