Masks and metamorphoses" study day
African Figures in Contemporary Art
African masks have been a source of inspiration for artists in Europe since the late 19th century. Their appeal lies not only in their sculptural and scriptural forms and aesthetics, but also in the symbolic charge they carry. Made from a variety of materials such as wood, plant fibers, fabric, skin, beads, shells and pigments, they are used in ceremonies and rituals. These masks represent divinities, spirits, ancestors, animals or other important figures in the cosmology of various African cultures.
Finally, this study day aims to broaden the field of knowledge, inspire new creative perspectives and create an interdisciplinary dialogue between history, culture and artistic creation.
