Reading workshop: the ethics of discussion in question: ideal or delusion of modern democratic societies?
by Charles Vincent

Summary:
In geopolitics (Ukraine, Gaza), in legal and social issues (domestic violence, ecological combat, cultural dialogue), in politics (republican field), the Habermassian discussion ethic has imposed itself (consultations, great debate...) as much as it reveals particularly problematic limits and detour. We propose to return to Habermas's
Habermas's theoretical structure, which aims to build on the Enlightenment and improve its tools and uses in a plural society. But is there really a rationality of discussion? a better argument? Should we tend towards the Habermas ideal, complement it or abandon it in favor of other ways of managing dissensus (ethics of care, ethics of conflict or authority, education)? Let's discuss a few texts. Jurgen Habermas (1929-) is a German philosopher of the Frankfurt School, who worked in particular on the link between morality and communication.
